Ray the Random Robot™ and his random walks around MetaTrader land

2

I recently stumbled across a thread on LinkedIn which started with the querulous claim:

Do you know any trading system that generates more than $20,000/month profit?

accompanied by a suspiciously familiar looking equity curve:

As we reported way back in August, MetaQuotes have been working on adding objected oriented programming to MetaTrader 4. They originally suggested that a version of the MetaTrader 4 terminal supporting OOP EAs would become available in September, but that's not how things have worked out in practice!

MetaQuotes have just announced the public beta testing of a new combined MQL4/MQL5 development environment. According to their original announcement about the forthcoming changes to MetaTrader 4:

We have transferred the maximum possible amount of MQL5 language functions and features fully preserving MQL4 functionality. In other words, all powerful MQL5 functions, including ООP and the native code compiler, will become available in MQL4.

Sid is the Superstitious Robot and Ray is the Random Robot and they are cousins. They finally got to meet in person earlier this week thanks to Sid's appearance in the Designs of the Year 2013 exhibition at The Design Museum in London. Here's the undeniable proof:

It has recently been pointed out to me by a sharp eyed reader of the Trading Gurus home page that Ray the Random Robot has been flatlining for quite a while now. Here's how his equity curve looks at this precise moment in time, courtesy of myfxbook:

For the last month or so Ray the Random Robot™ has been involved in a friendly competition with RAI, a cousin of his conceived in the laboratory of Dr. T, who installed some artificial intelligence in the space between the ears where Ray keeps his artificial stupidity.  Both "robots" were entered in the February 2012 Vantage FX/myfxbook trading contest, and myfxbook have just announced the final results on their blog.  Having read that blog post, and then checked his own final standing in the competition, Ray is now suffering from a terrible pain in all the diodes down his left side and is hiding in a corner of his room. He's refusing to talk to anyone, least of all me. I'll try to explain on Ray's behalf the cause of his current psychological problems.

It's been in the pipeline for a long time now, but the Trading Gurus are now happy to announce that Ray the Random Robot™ has finally been ported to TradeStation's EasyLanguage.  Ultimately this decision was prompted as much by the announcement of MultiCharts at LMAX, as by the prior arrival of TradeStation Forex and "TS for FX for free". Whilst EasyLanguage has been around for a long time and is in some respects the "industry standard", it's never before been readily useable by newcomers to automated trading with a limited amount of capital.  Although it's still officially in beta testing, LMAX MultiCharts does promise to change that aspect of things for the better, as long as you're not a United States citizen! If you are a US citizen then I'm sure TradeStation FX will be happy to discuss opening an account with you!

As a couple of our more perceptive readers have recently pointed out to me, Ray the Random Robot's equity curve (the live version of which you can see proudly displayed to the left of this post) has recently suffered an obvious "blip". Here's an enlarged version of where Ray's up to today, preserved for posterity:

At the request of one of our loyal readers we've just opened up a new section on the Trading Gurus community forum devoted to Artificially Intelligent Trading.  As other loyal readers will know, here at the Trading Gurus we love Ray the Random Robot and his particular brand of Artificially Stupid Trading. However we're also very open minded, not to mention modest! Apart from anything else we're keen to discover how other sorts of "robots" go about earning their keep. Some interesting debates have already started on the forum, where Pippa has recently revealed some very interesting news.

If you're from the United States you may well never have heard of Buru Trader. However if you're a customer of Interbank FX Australia like me, you probably will have done. It's a bundle of two MetaTrader 4 expert advisors called "buru New York" and "buru Tokyo", which IBFX Australia have been promoting over the last few months.  On March 15th IBFX were inviting their customers to find out about:
